Senior Product Designer (Mechanical)

As a Senior Product Designer at Mindset, you will play a critical role in exploring and proving designs from conception to manufacturability. The key responsibilities extend into creating and maintaining mechanical designs and drawings while working closely with design and engineering teams to advance the development of patentable designs and technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain mechanical designs for LED lighting products, including component and assembly drawings.
  • Build prototypes in a hands-on environment.
  • Collaborate with the engineering and product development teams to ensure designs meet functional and aesthetic requirements.
  • Create and modify detailed 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings primarily in Onshape (experience in other programs such as Solidworks, Fusion360 is acceptable).
  • Generate ancillary project deliverables such as installation instructions and spec sheet data.
  • Analyze and evaluate design alternatives to ensure optimal functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback to cross-functional teams.
  • Support the procurement and both internal manufacturing teams and external vendors during the production process.
  • Support the external testing and verification of products through regulatory standards bodies such as UL and ETL.
  • Brainstorming and problem solving mentorship with junior and senior members of the team.

Qualification:

  • Exceptional creativity and communication skills, along with a positive attitude and a highly collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Minimum 2 year Diploma of Technology, Engineering, Industrial Design or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in mechanical design for medium to high volume production.
  • Proficient in a 3D modeling environment such as Solidworks, Fusion360, Onshape.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and materials
  • Shop skills, basic woodworking, metal working, CNC operation an asset.
  • Experience with designing for any of following manufacturing processes:
    • Aluminum Extrusion
    • Plastic Extrusion
    • Die casting
    • Injection Molding
    • Sheet Metal
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage projects autonomously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to produce high-quality work.
  • LED and optical design experience is an asset.
  • Commercial lighting and/or architectural industry experience is a big benefit.
  • Residential or commercial construction experience is an asset.
  • Electrical or electronics experience is an asset.
  • Photography or Keyshot 3D rendering experience is an asset.
